Electricity Deregulation

If you or your tenants have been shocked by increases in your electric bill, you're not alone. Electricity rates have been increasing at an alarming pace.

Most people don’t think about their electric bills, but when you pair other increased costs with skyrocketing electric bills you feel it where it hurts. Your wallet.

In a deregulated state like Massachusetts  you can switch providers or plans to find a more cost-effective rate.

Your electricity bill contains 2 main usage related charges, the Distribution portion, and the Supply portion - you can't change the Distribution part, its determined by where your home is, and in MA is supplied by one of the main providers: Eversource, National Grid or Unitil.

But you can change the supply part, and this is where you can find a plan that suits your budget.

What do you need so you can save?

If you have a copy of a previous bill for the property, then that's most of what you'll need

Using Swytcheroo is a very simple process, we will assist you in choosing your electricity supplier, and once selected, we'll handle the rest. You just have to pay the bills from then on!

In the sample bill, the Supply portion ($78) is where you can make savings.

Compare rates and plans

Now that you know you can shop around for better rates, have a look at some of the options available from alternate suppliers, such as:

Free Nights and Weekends - depending on your usage patterns, these might be suitable - but be careful, if its free at weekends for example, it means it will be more expensive at other times!

Fixed Rates - lock in a fixed rate for maybe 6 months, 1 year or even 2 years. That means that you are not affected by rate rises for that period, but on the flip side - if the price falls, then you are still paying at the original fixed rate.

What changes?

When you swytch supplier, you will still receive the same monthly bill from your utility company, the only change will be the line item that shows your electricity (kWh) usage.

There's no physical work involved, and there's no power disruptions or outages. It's merely a billing change.

Sample Eversource Bill

Your bill is divided into two major parts, supply and delivery.

Supply - The actual cost of the electricity you use in your home or business.

Delivery - This includes the costs of building, maintaining and operating the system that delivers reliable service to your home, as well as state and federally mandated charges that fund financial assistance, energy efficiency and renewable energy programs.

Its the Supply part that you can look for savings on.

On the second page of your bill, the line item under "Supplier" that's called Generation Service Charge is the price that you can use to compare with other suppliers.

In the sample bill on the left, the electricity unit (kWh) rate is 13.098 cents per kilowatt.
